_MG_9255Karen, Huxley and Hazel make chalk drawings

Hazel Stewart Brown was born in 2002, the same year that her parents, Karen Stewart and Howard Brown, founded their pioneering eco-fashion label. Stewart + Brown, which they pronounce “Stewart Brown,” rather than “Stewart and Brown,” was named not after themselves but for Hazel—and six years later, for her brother, Huxley, as well. Here, the budding eco-fashionista hones her journalism skills by interviewing Stewart + Brown’s co-founder and design director, whom she happens to know by another name: Mom.

NAU features S+B in Soho

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

If you’re close to New York City between now and December 31 be sure to check out the NAU (pronounced “now”) pop-up shop in Soho formally named HERE / NAU / NYC. The fine folks at NAU built out there incredible space using materials that were “almost entirely rooted in New York City’s waste stream— fallen tree limbs found on the street, timber and metal pipes from derelict Brooklyn factories and piles of discarded cardboard boxes.” Part store, part gallery, part event space, and with plenty of room for all things unpredictable, HERE / NAU / NYC’s about sharing an approach to sustainable business and considered design in an unforgettable way. A showcase for NAU’s modern eco-friendly design vision, the pop-up shop is peppered with a carefully edited selection of their favorite sustainable and socially responsible complimentary brands including STEWART+BROWN, Tom’s and Freitag.

Body&Soul – Nov 09
Check out Karen Stewarts answer, when Body&Soul asked, “whats the one item of clothing you can’t live without?” You might be surprised that she didn’t pick one of her coveted Stewart+Brown Mongolian Cashmere sweaters, but instead her trusty Patagonia fleece. Even though we could all easily dress head to toe in luxurious Stewart+Brown it’s important to mix it up with our other favorite eco conscious brands.
